Stamatios V. Kartalopoulos, PhD, is currently the Williams Professor in Telecommunications Networking at the Telecommunications graduate program of the University of Oklahoma at Tulsa. He is also principle consultant of PhotonExperts, a consulting company on optical communications networks, systems and technology.

Formerly and for 22 years Dr Kartalopoulos defined, led and managed research and development teams in Bell Laboratories, in the areas of DWDM optical networking, SDH /SONET and ATM, Cross-connect, Switching, Transmission and Access, as well as in technology. For his contributions, he has received the company¡¯s President¡¯s Award and several awards of Excellence.

He holds 18 patents relating to communications, systems and components, and he has published more than 90 scientific papers. He is the author of ¡°Optical Bit Error Rate¡±, ¡°Next Generation SONET/SDH: Voice and Data¡±, ¡°DWDM: Networks, Systems and Components¡±, ¡°Introduction to DWDM Technology¡±, ¡°Fault Detectability in DWDM¡°, ¡°Understanding SONET/SDH and ATM¡±, and ¡°Understanding Neural Networks and Fuzzy logic¡±. Two versions of his book in DWDM Technology have been translated in Chinese.

Dr Kartalopoulos has been a distinguished speaker of IEEE ComSoc and of Bell Labs, he is the chair of the Communications Security Technical Committee, and he has been the E-i-C of IEEE Press, area-editor of IEEE Communications Magazine/Optical Comm. Suppl., past Vice-President of IEEE Neural Networks Council, senior member of IEEE and member of SPIE.
